(10) From the Desire of Being Consulted, Deliver Me, Jesus
Litany of Humility, Line 5: “From the desire of being Consulted, deliver me, Jesus.”
Let’s be honest—this one feels a little personal.
Being consulted makes us feel respected, needed, useful.
It means people value our insight, trust our judgment, and care what we think.
Yes…
But what happens when not being consulted makes us feel hurt, angry, or invisible?
That’s the heart of this next line in the Litany of Humility—and it might sting a little:
“From the desire of being consulted, deliver me, Jesus.”
Let’s sit with that one.
😡 When They Didn’t Ask You… and It Hurt
You’ve been there:
They planned the thing without you.
Made the decision without checking in.
Didn’t even ask what you thought.
And your stomach sank.
Maybe you felt disrespected.
Maybe forgotten.
Maybe a little offended.
Here’s the hard truth:
It’s not just about the decision.
It’s about the wound of not being needed.
You wanted a voice. A vote. A seat at the table.
But no one passed you the mic.
🧠 “I Would’ve Done It Differently…”
And then the voice creeps in:
“If they had just asked me…”
“I would've done it better.”
“Now look at the mess they made.”
That’s not discernment.
That’s pride whispering in a holy tone.
Wanting to help is beautiful.
Needing to be consulted in order to feel valuable?
That’s a red flag.
🚨 When You Didn’t Consult Them… and They Blow
Ever had someone melt down on you…
Not because of the decision you made—
But because you didn’t ask them first?
They might say:
“Wow, thanks for the invite…”
“Guess my opinion doesn’t count.”
“Well I would’ve handled it differently.”
Underneath it all?
A heart aching to be noticed.
To be influential.
To be central.
That’s not evil.
But it’s not freedom either.
🙋♀️ Let’s Flip the Mirror
What if it’s you?
What if that simmering irritation is pride whispering:
“My input would’ve saved the day.”
“If I’m not consulted, I’m not respected.”
“They should have asked me.”
That’s the moment to pause and ask Jesus:
Why do I feel so shaken when I’m not included?
Maybe it’s time to let go of the need to be consulted…
And be set free.
🕊️ The Freedom of Letting It Go
When Jesus delivers you from the desire to be consulted:
You don’t need to insert yourself to feel useful.
You’re not crushed when your name’s not brought up.
You can bless what others are doing without needing to lead it.
You stop worshiping your wisdom…
And start trusting His.
🙏 A Simple Prayer
Jesus, I want to be wise—but not prideful.
Helpful—but not controlling.
Available—but not addicted to influence.
Free me from needing to be consulted.
Let me rejoice when others step forward.
Let me trust Your voice more than mine.
Amen.
